【答】1. 句首的So 跟that，没任何关系，由于So是在让步从句开头地方，而that在主句中。这里的So是“连接性副词”，引起另外一个句子，它是对上文意义的续接。类似的还有however （然而），too（也）等。
2. 原译文没把took the plunge翻译出来。该词组的意思是：“冒一冒险；冒险尝试；孤注一掷；采取断然行动”。
3. in the hopes that... 在......期望中，that从句是hopes的同位语从句，说明hopes的内容。跟
took the plunge连用，说明“在带有......希冀中，采取断然行动”。
