During the 1940s electron microscopes routinely achieved resolution better than that possible with a visible light microscope, while the performance of x-ray microscopes resisted improvement.

During the 1940s electron microscopes routinely achieved resolution better than that possible with a visible light microscope, while the performance of x-ray microscopes resisted improvement.
that在此为替代词,替代resolution,后接possible with...
than the resolution possible with a visible light microscope.
