The Records of the Grand Historian was the masterpiece of Sima Qian, written from 109 B.C. to 91 B.C. and it is also known in English by its Chinese name “Shiji”. Sima Qian is the first major Chinese historian and his Records of the Grand Historian chronicles the history of China and many of the adjacent countries from the remote past to his own time. Because the records were the first systematized historical text of its type, they had heavily influenced the Chinese historiography and prose creation. Besides, many western readers who are interested in history love this book greatly and they value this book not only for its historical importance, but perhaps even more for Sima Qian’s warm interest in people.
