1、从属连词
That，whether，if不是连接代词更不是连接副词，在从句中不充当任何成分，只起到连接从句的功能。That没实质意义，而whether，if有“是不是”的意思。
例句：That prices for fruit will go up is certain.
水果价格要上涨是确凿无疑的了。
例句：He ordered that we should start at once.
他命令大家立刻出发。
例句：Please ask Tom if he will come to Jims birthday party tomorrow.
问一下汤姆他明天是否会来参加吉姆的过生日聚会。
Whether与if均为“是不是”的意思。但在下列状况下，whether不可以被if替代
① whether引导主语从句并置于句首时
例句：Whether he can come to the party on time depends on the traffic.
他是不是能按时来参加聚会要看交通情况。
② whether引导表语从句时
例句：The question is whether we can arrive there on time.
问题是大家能否按时到那里。
③ whether从句作介词宾语时
例句：It depends on whether it will be fine.
那得看是否晴天。
④ whether后紧跟or not时
例句：I dont know whether or not he arrives.
我不了解他是不是已经到了。
2、连接代词
连接代词指具备代词的特征，同时又能引导从句的词，主要有what，whatever，who，whoever，whom，whose，which，whichever等。这类词在从句中既作特定的成分，又有具体的意思，不可以省略。大部分连接代词表示疑问。
例句：What we should do with the problem is undecided.
大家怎么样处置这个问题还未作出决定。
例句：What he said encouraged me greatly.
他说的话大大地激励了我。
例句：Im wondering whatever you have done make her so angry.
我纳闷你到底做了哪些让她这么生气。
例句：The question is who we should trust.
问题是大家应当相信哪个。
